Because you're mine, I cross the line

From a recent reader review of One Dead Hen on Amazon:

"I don't mind the odd swear word in a story where it is relevant but there is a line and this book crosses it for me"

I was going to write an eloquent, measured riposte, touching on subjects such as authenticity of speech and the innate beauty in all language, but do you know what? Fuck it.

Oh for fudge sake (staying behind that line)...what an idiotic thing to say in a review.

This dude/dudette needs to spend some time round my family. They'd soon realise, there is no line with swearing in reality, a reality you're emulating in the books.

Well, a skewed reality anyway...

Never stops amazing me how sensitive people are to swearing. Even people who swear a lot

It made me angry.

Not something that happens a lot these days (fatherhood changes you, apparently lowers your testosterone as well according to a new study)but it really peed (happy now, sweary worriers?) me off.

I will never, ever understand GROWN-UP people who get all weird about strong language, as if we should all behave as if there are small children in the room at all times. I've heard those people say that our use of "bad words" (which is an idiotic concept to begin with-- there are no bad words, aside from maybe racial slurs) shows an immature mind. But I think their bizarre hang-up is what's immature.
Sorry. It's something I've been called on myself, and it drives me bat-shit insane.

Heath, I started a reply but it turned into the post I meant to do yesterday, but couldn't be bothered. So thanks - you got me off my arse!
